I invite my sister to my high sierra trip this year. The original plan was to stay at Sunrise for the first night and Merced Lake for the second night. The shortest hike out from Merced Lake is about 12 miles long. After finished the first day hike someone was already exhausted so we had to cut our route short and stayed at Sunrise for both nights. Luckily enough we were able to change our reservation the last minute.
We started from Tuolumne Meadows Cathedral Lake trial head after noon. From the trail head along John Muir Trail all the way to sunrise camp is about 7.5 miles. Cathedral Lake is about 0.5 mile away from JMT. The lake is only 1 mile round trip form the trail and believe or not we did not even hike in to see the lake.It was her first ever backpacking experience so I had to be easy on her !!!
