Before Sunset is the sequel to Before Sunrise. This is one of the best sequel movies so far. I can’t help to watch this movie again and again every time when I am longing for deep sentimental, bittersweet type of conversation.
“Before Sunset” is not just great stand along , it also makes “Before Sunrise” even better. What makes this movie great is it did not try to create more drama but only try to fulfill the two characters.
這兩部戲,戲裏戲外都相距了九年。This arrangement makes the movie so real. There were definitely several moments that I felt confused if I am watching Ethan and Julie or Jesse and Celine. It makes sense; Ethan and Julie share the screenwriting credit with the director Richard Linklater. They indicated that that they were both heavily involved in crafting what their characters say in the movie. I believe the two characters reflect to Ethan and Julies themselves more and less.
The story is not pretentious but once again makes us ponder whether there is such a thing as a "soul mate". This is a movie about love but it also talks about regrets. The regret you missed the one and only in your life.
I like how the finally scene is arranged, Celine is dancing with Nina Simone’s song and Jesse deliberately miss his flight. In that quiet moment, they both know life is about to take an unexpected turn….
Miss that flight is probably something I will do too. Ha
I always thought the beauty of these two movies is that Celine and Jesse were never meant to be together. They might and might not be soul mates, it's purely aesthetic.
ReplyDeleteHa "Aesthetic".. What a word.
ReplyDeleteA bit cynical though, isn't it?! :-)
After all I don't really believe in "One and only" either. we are all so special in our own way...
Huh ? Aesthetic ? 這個字太難了. 我程度太差, 有看沒有懂, 還得查字典.
ReplyDeleteSoul mates may exist, however, your chances of finding them might be out of 3 standard deviations. So does it matter if you believe in "one and only" ? Hmm, I will deliberately miss the flight to catch up with missed connection.
